In the past Venetian stucco was also called "caemento marmorea" (Vitruvio) or "Magistri cementari" as testified by historian Andrea Agnello early IX century A.C., in Liber Pontificalis Ecclesiae Ravennatins. These terms identify the first stucco function, the 'building one'.

To apply stucco to walls covered more functions at once. With stucco the wall become stronger, smoother and white, all with natural elements (Venetian stucco in feet) which granted to the wall its primary role to protect against external agents.
